Our office in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is located in the Marmaduke Williams House, which is named after its most famous early resident. Marmaduke Williams was born on April 6, 1774 in Caswell County, North Carolina. He completed preparatory studies, studied law and practiced law for several years. Williams was a member of the North Carolina State Senate in 1802. He was then elected to the 8th United States Congress and reelected to the 9th and 10th Congresses (March 4, 1803-March 3, 1809). He moved to the Mississippi Territory in 1810, and then to Huntsville.
In 1818, when he was 44 years old, Williams and his family moved to Tuscaloosa. He was a delegate to the Alabama Constitutional Convention of 1819 and made an unsuccessful bid to become the first Governor of Alabama. Williams served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1821 to 1842 and was a Judge of the Tuscaloosa County Court from 1832 to 1842. Williams died on October 29, 1850 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tuscaloosa.
The Marmaduke Williams House was built in the 1830s by Williams’ son-in-law, Judge Thomas Owen. The original house plan consisted of two main rooms on the ground floor of the main block: a large room with a fireplace and a smaller unheated room containing stairs to the second floor. The ell in the rear of the house was added at a later time. Located in the Druid City Historic District of Tuscaloosa, the Marmaduke Williams House is one of the oldest homes in Tuscaloosa and is the only early Federal style building that still exists in Tuscaloosa. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1975.
