The City of Bessemer was founded by Henry DeBardeleben in 1887. DeBardeleben was a wealthy industrialist who purchased the land now known as Bessemer for $100,000.00 in 1886. The city was first named Brooklyn, but DeBardeleben renamed it Bessemer in honor of Sir Henry Bessemer, a British scientist who was famous for his innovations in the steel manufacturing process. Bessemer boomed as large deposits of iron ore, coal and limestone were mined in the area. All three ingredients are necessary for the manufacture of steel. Bessemer was a major steel center for most of the 20th century. Its rapid early growth led to its nickname as “The Marvel City.”

Bessemer is located in North Central Alabama about 18 miles southwest of Birmingham. The city has a population of 29,000 residents. Today, although its steel and mining operations have greatly decreased, manufacturing of other products and retail services have become more prominent. Bessemer is now home to Watermark Place, an outlet mall, and Alabama Adventure, a popular theme park.

A satellite Jefferson County courthouse is located in downtown Bessemer. Its location is the result of the special county government district known as the “Bessemer Cutoff.” The “Bessemer Cutoff” was established in the middle of the 20th Century. Certain court rules in Alabama govern which cases are brought and litigated in the “Bessemer Cutoff.”

Bessemer operates its own school system that is separate from Jefferson County schools. Bessemer’s school system includes Hard Elementary, Jonesboro Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Abrams Elementary, Westhills Elementary, Davis Middle and Bessemer City High School.

The Bessemer Division of the Tenth Judicial Circuit serves the citizens of Bessemer. Hear What Our Clients Have To Say

"After my husband was injured in a burn accident at work, we felt the accident could have been avoided. I was not sure where to start, but after careful research, we met with Justin Smith and shared our experience. From day one, we felt we were in good hands. Justin and Dell explained everything and kept us informed from start to finish. It was a complicated case that took an outside the box approach. Both Justin and Dell made us feel like part of the team."
