Justin Lee Smith passed away on September 29, 2022. Justin was a partner at Cross & Smith for over 14 years. His colleagues at the law firm miss him dearly.

A native of Sumter County, Alabama, Justin received his undergraduate degree from the University of West Alabama in 1999. He earned his J.D. from the Mississippi College School of Law in 2003, cum laude, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. Justin was awarded an academic scholarship by the Mississippi College School of Law based on his superior academic performance. He was Executive Editor of the Mississippi College Law Review, recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in Remedies, and a member of the Honor Court.

Justin was a trial lawyer since his graduation from law school in 2003. With over 15 years of experience, Justin was remarkably successful. He handled cases that generated verdicts and settlements for clients in excess of $50,000,000.00.

Justin represented clients in state and federal courts in Alabama and Mississippi. Although Justin handled cases throughout the State of Alabama and East Mississippi, his practice primarily involved representing individuals and businesses in Greater Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and the Black Belt. Justin represented plaintiffs in various types of cases, including wrongful death, toxic exposure, product liability, eighteen-wheeler trucking accidents, automobile accidents, nursing home neglect, insurance fraud and bad faith, drug and medical device litigation, and work-related injuries.

Justin served on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Association for Justice. He was also a member of the Alabama State Bar, the Mississippi State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, and the American Association for Justice. In addition, Justin also served on the University of West Alabama Board of Trustees.

Justin was a devoted father, a loving husband, a leader in his church and community, and a respected attorney. He had a big personality, a sharp wit, and an infectious laugh. Justin was a friend to everyone he met. He was a man of God and lived his faith. He had a tremendous work ethic and always, always had a positive attitude. He was a man of integrity, strong character, and morals. He was an attorney who sincerely cared about his clients. If he saw a need, he devised a way to fill it. He made the world around him a better place.
