What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Video Transcription:

Justin L. Smith (1977 – 2022): Oftentimes in auto injury cases in Tuscaloosa and elsewhere, the other driver may not have insurance coverage. Well, you are required — the insurance company that sells you your own insurance — is required to provide you what we call UM coverage or Uninsured Motorist Coverage.

And so, in fact if someone hits you that doesn’t have coverage, you will have coverage for your own injuries, most likely, through your own auto insurance policy. In fact if they don’t have enough insurance coverage to cover your injury, that uninsured motorist coverage will also kick in to provide you coverage there. That’s something that we handle, and feel like we know a lot about.

If you’re not at fault we still need your insurance information, because it may very well be that the other driver does not have enough insurance to cover you. Their insurance coverage may not be exactly what it needs to be, and your own insurance may come in to fill in that gap. That can be very important, because you pay premiums for just this situation, and we want to make sure that we maximize full recovery for you.
