American Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s hit song “Before He Cheats” was also recorded in Muscle Shoals. In January 2010 Muscle Shoals was added to the Mississippi Blues Trail.

Muscle Shoals City Schools have earned a reputation for excellence. In March 2008, Muscle Shoals High School and Howell-Graves Preschool were awarded the Lighthouse Award by the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

The Thirty First Judicial Circuit serves the citizens of Muscle Shoals and Colbert County. The Colbert County Courthouse was built in 1881 and is located in nearby Tuscumbia. The county courthouse still houses the Colbert County government in addition to serving as the centerpiece for Tuscumbia’s historical district. The Municipal Court holds sessions every Thursday starting at 2:00 p.m. Muscle Shoals is governed by an elected Mayor and five City Council members.
