Hoover is the largest suburb of Birmingham. There are approximately 82,000 people who live in Hoover. It is located in both Jefferson and Shelby Counties and encompasses a large area of land in north central Alabama.
The city is named after William H. Hoover who was a local insurance company owner. Hoover began as a residential community in the 1930s. It was incorporated as a city in 1967. Hoover has grown rapidly over the past 25 years. Annexation of the Riverchase business and residential community resulted in the addition of large office buildings and employers to the city. The opening of Interstate 459 proved to be a major catalyst for growth in the Hoover area providing interstate travel between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Moreover, the opening in 1986 of the Riverchase Galleria resulted in the most significant development by greatly increasing tax revenue for the city. Since that time, Hoover has grown from a small residential community to one of the largest and most well planned cities in Alabama. Its emphasis on retail services continues to provide substantial tax revenue.
Hoover is home to some of the nicest and most well kept neighborhoods in the Greater Birmingham area. These neighborhoods and communities continue to expand and thrive as Hoover continues to grow its population. Hoover is also home to several managed parks and natural areas that attract visitors from other cities in north central Alabama.
The Hoover City School System is widely recognized for its excellence in both academic and extracurricular activities. In fact, the success of its school system has proven to be a major catalyst of the city’s rapid residential growth. Hoover has ten elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools, Spain Park High School and Hoover High School. Both schools rank high for academic excellence and are ranked in the top 500 schools in the United States.
