Jasper, Alabama is located in Northwestern Alabama and is a part of Walker County. Jasper is home to just under 15,000 residents and is just less than 30 square miles making the City of Jasper a class six municipality. Jasper grew rapidly when the first railroad lines were run through Jasper in 1886. The Kansas City-Memphis and Birmingham Railroad Lines and the Sheffield and Birmingham Railroads caused the population of Jasper to rise from 200 people in 1886 to over 3,000 people in 1890. The population boom can also be attributed to the growth of the coal mining industry that began after the railroads were built. At the height of the coal mining era, Jasper had six coal mines and over 400 coke ovens in operation. The city once was among the world’s leading producers of coal.

The area now known as Jasper was first settled in 1815, but incorporation of the town did not occur until 1888. In the Civil War, Jasper was invaded by Union troops on their way to the Battle of Selma. The troops burned the county courthouse and several other structures in Jasper. Outlying farms were raided for supplies needed by the Union Army.

Walker County has a population of approximately 72,000 people. It was formed on December 26, 1883 from sections of Marion and Tuscaloosa Counties. The county is named after John Walker who represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1819 until 1822. William B. Bankhead National Forest and Lewis Smith Lake are major attractions for residents and tourists. In addition to Jasper, the towns of Carbon Hill, Cordova, Curry, Dora, Eldridge, Kansas, Nauvoo, Oakman, Parrish, Sipsey and Sumiton are located in Walker County.

There are several major roadways in Walker County. These include U.S. Highway 78 and Alabama State Routes 5, 13, 18, 69, 102, 118, 124, 195, and 269.
