It has also been suggested that the settlement was known as Kentuck because the word meant paradise during that time period. The city was officially named Northport in 1832.

Northport has a wide variety of cultural activities. Northport is widely known for the Kentuck Festival of the Arts that takes place on the third weekend of October each year. The festival features folk and contemporary art as well as traditional crafts. The artists who participate in the festival include many folk and visionary artists whose work has garnered national and international fame. The festival also includes two music stages that offer performances of blues, bluegrass, folk, country, gospel, classical and alternative rock.

Northport also hosts Art Night on the first Thursday of every month. The art galleries in downtown Northport open their doors after hours and most also offer arts and crafts demonstrations to the public.

The first Tuesday in December, Northport hosts Dickens Downtown. Thousands of participants come to experience Christmas as it was in the 19th century. The festival comes complete with characters in 19th century costume and “snow” is arranged for the occasion.

The citizens of Northport are served by Sixth Judicial District. The Tuscaloosa County Courthouse is located across the river from Northport in the City of Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa County Courthouse houses the County Commission, Probate Office, Circuit Clerk-Civil, Circuit Clerk-Criminal, District Attorney, Public Defender and other county offices. Northport operates under a Mayor-Council form of government. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
